Welcome to Room 11 – TKT
Nau mai haere mai ki te Ruma tekau ma tahi
Our blog is an introduction to show you all what happens in our class. Our class is very energetic, loud and a little bit crazy, but in a nice way! Our class is a lot different to other classes around our school because we are a Maori Enrichment class known as Te Kahui Tamariki class. We learn about the Maori language and Maori history more often than the other classes at WIS (Wainuiomata Intermediate School).
We learn mostly in English but throughout the week we learn heaps of useful phrases in Maori like, Nga Taputapu, days of the week, months of the year and also place names. We also learn about our own heritage, whakapapa and pepeha.
Since we are in TKT it is our job to look after our school marae. We are the kaitiaki (guardians) of this special place. We learn about the things in our school marae including the rules, Tukutuku panels and the marae mural. We organise Area powhiri and welcome new students and teachers and we get to showcase everything we have been taught. Everyone in our class is also in our school Kapa Haka group and we are often called upon to do performances around the community.
A proverb or whakatauki we try to follow is: “He waka eke noa”, A canoe in which we are all in. We use this proverb to remind us of how important it is to work together and support one another. Come along, jump on our waka and enjoy the ride. Kia kaha e hoa ma!
