The Final Countdown – Goodbye Whare maire/Room 7

This year has been great the best year I ever had in my life. It’s a shame that I have to leave but it’s nearly time for me to become a year 9, go to high school and make even better years. This year I have improved a lot I went to being a dumb number 1 to a smart number 10. Like I mostly say in my other blogs, last year wasn’t the best for me, so that means I wasn’t being smart, I wasn’t doing my work, what I am now doing to this day.

And the thing I’m doing today is working hard. So I was moved to a new class with a new teacher who is better than my last teacher(not being mean btw just telling the truth)

Anyway with my new teacher he has been teaching me until I was about to quit…but the best thing about that is I never did quit…he has helped me a lot and had made me into my number 10, so with the help of my teacher I am able to now do my work on my own. Now I can do my writing, spelling, and math just like how my parents want it to be like.

I go from wandering off into my mind to being distracted very easily. Literally, I can go from focused to confused at a blink of an eye. Also, I don’t get much sleep at night which I need to keep track on and work out my sleeping pattern asap.

In our class Room 7 we have a motto, a motto that a lot of us try to remember and stick to it the motto that pushes us to our boundaries and our motto is “WORK SMART,  PLAY HARD, LOVE LIFE” and I plan to stick with our motto for as long as I can throughout my life.

In term 4 2017 I had to come into Room 7 because my past teacher had gone so I had to move. When I first arrived I didn’t know what to think about this classroom and the teacher, he was teaching the class some things I had never knew. On my first day with the new class work I did horrible, the reason why I did bad was that I got away with a lot of stuff, so I  wasn’t used to doing this much work I didn’t know what to do.

What I  also didn’t know is that this is how I would figure out that I was really smart. Ever since then I started to do even more work I got used to the fact, I got so used to it that some of the work became just too easy. Sometimes I struggled but I pushed through it was tough but I didn’t care…a little bit anyway.

All my effort and hard work were so worth it, I got smarter and smarter by the week, and that got me being able to do my work smarter, faster and better. One of the things I love the most is that I got to make my parents, family and my teacher proud that I have improved sooo much. I got to become my Number 10, instead of my Number 1.

And so I have been improving for a year and a quarter and that’s what has made me so proud of myself. This year has been fun I got to make new friends and have fun with them I got to have some days off here and there, but the best thing was school was fun I will miss Wainuiomata Intermediate School but, it’s nearly time to go to high school to do mooore work but also to have some fun…besides I’ll get over it. – Te Awarangi

2018 Is Over – Kakite WIS!

My teacher Mr. Kauone expected me to succeed in my academics like reading, writing and maths and also topic inquiry. It made me feel confident because I knew I could succeed because I could learn well in this classroom with a great teacher who made things easy for me to understand. He always wanted me to be able to think before I do the things I do as well as managing myself better in and out of school.

For my class culture, we started from personal identity and ended at national identity. Room 7 class students came up with a bunch of values for cultural identity. We decorated our class, cultural wall with a bunch of words and value that we had to show throw out the year and also pictures of us when we when young.

Growth Mindset is when you keep on going and don’t give up, think about the positive. Most mistakes, makes you learn more so you know what not to do next time you think you are going to do what you did to make that mistake. Fixed Mindset is basically the opposite. When you have a Fix Mindset it’s when you give and stop trying when you think there is no way to get through, why not go around, bust it down or climb over.

Throughout this year key competencies have helped me a lot to achieve my goals trying to reach above where I need to be in academics. Managing self-has helped me stay calm, keep my hands and feet to myself. If it wasn’t because of me participating and contributing I wouldn’t be as good as I am now at playing sport especially basketball. I can relate to other as easy now communicate with others, collaborate as easy with topic inquiry and other students in our class. My thinking skills improved a lot which helps me focus and get on with my work.

Overall I think that I’ve made the right choice to be in Room 7 because I made so much progress in this classroom. From term 1 I had been very bad and I fell off track with my learning and I was that naughty that I had to keep switching technocraft and I even missed out on cooking because of my behavior. Going on to term 2 I started to get back on track and I started to get confident with coming to school. Once I got to the end of term 2, I worked so hard to earn 3 merit awards because I worked smart, played hard and loved life. – Dennis

The End And A New Start

So 2018 is finally coming to an end and this year has been great for me academically because of the help I’ve gotten from the teachers around the school, in our area and especially Mr. Kauone, he’s helped me these 1 and a half years I’ve been in this class and he’s always pushing me to be my best, which is good because in my opinion if I was in a different class I don’t think I would be where I am now in my academics and my key competencies.

At the start of the year Mr Kauone set high expectations for me in my academics and my key competencies to make sure that by the end of the year that I’d have achieved all my goals and make sure that I was good with all of my key competencies, especially with managing self, when I came in here last year, I always got off-task and always got distracted and distracted others but Mr has helped me and taught me how to control it and now I don’t get as distracted as before but I still tend to get distracted and distract others but like I said, not as much as before.

In term 1 we started to build our classroom culture and learned about our school values and what makes our classroom unique from the other classes. Our class has our motto and it is “Work Smart, Play Hard and Love Life” to me this means if we work smart in and out of the classroom and play hard we’ll love our lives at school. Mr. Kauone also wants us to always be our #10, and that’s where he makes sure that we do our work without being disruptive and finishing it on time and it’s done to required leveled expectations.

Overall this two years my academics have improved heaps being here at WIS because when I first started intermediate, I only scored a 3A for reading then progressed to a 4A! I’m really proud that I achieved this. Also when I was a year 7, for my stats/algebra pre-test I scored a 3A and for the post-test, I got a 4B and now I’ve improved to a 4P which puts me up 1 sub level which is good. Then when I was a year 7 with my Geometry/Measurement test, in the pre-test I scored a 3A and also when I was year 7, in the post-test I scored a 4P and unfortunately scored a 4B this year but I think if I did the test again today I would’ve gotten a different score. And like before, when I was a year 7, with writing I first scored a 3A and then throughout the year as a year 7 I scored a 4P and 3B which is alright but I could’ve done better and I did. This year, the first writing test we did I scored a 4P and then the latest writing test we did I got a, can you guess? No? Ok, I got a 5P !! That’s the best score I’ve ever gotten in my life at school, I’m super proud of that and feel good about myself.

Then with my personal goals, I set myself to be a better overall basketball player and I can tell that I’ve improved than from the start of the year where I improved on my shooting form, handles, passing, layups and shooting mid-range and three’s. I couldn’t have gotten better without any help and so I got help from my friends around the school and then I also got help from Mr. Syph and Mrs. Ta’ala, they helped me improve on my game overall and I can’t wait to keep on improving to a point where I want to get drafted into the NBA.

With the key competencies, I’ve set myself to work on managing self because I used to get distracted and distract others a lot before I set myself to this goal and now I’m not as disruptive anymore in and out of class which is good for my learning and my classmates learning.

Through these two years I’ve been here at WIS, the teacher has taught me to have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset and that means that if you have a growth mindset, you never give up on work that makes you stress and you keep on going, and when you have a fixed mindset you always give up and never seek help or never pay attention to the help that’s being given to you. Learning to have a growth mindset has helped me not give up on difficult tasks and to keep going and if I need help I ask instead of just staying on my desk and doing nothing.

With our topic on what we’re about to work on, like:maths, reading, writing etc, we’ve always had a Learning Intention and a Success Criteria which helped guide us to what we’re going to focus on with our work and reminds us what to do if we forget which helps me a lot because I always asked what the LI and SC is because I don’t know what it is but I always hated it because I didn’t like writing it down in my book but it is what it is. All of my work has been focused on the topic because I knew what the LI and SC was, but without it, I think I’d be writing or doing something off topic or what we’re not even doing.

Then with the Topic Learning Pathway we were learning about it and what it is and how to follow it to help guide us on what to do when we are doing topic inquiry, like for eg; it has different steps to help us do good in our inquiry like first we develop and clarify an idea and then we make our way to presenting.

Overall these two years at WIS have helped me with my academics, key competencies and to be a better person. I’ve learned heaps of things here to never forget and to use in my future life, I’d like to thank the teachers here at WIS for everything they’ve done for me. I can’t wait for high school and how it will help me as well. I will never forget these memories at WIS. – Christian

Last Few Weeks…

Coming towards the end of my journey at WIS I would like to talk about the progress I have made while being at this school. When I first started at WIS I was working below my year level standards. This term we took our summative tests and the results prove my progress. We recently got our writing results back, I got a 4P coming from 3A, which is a big improvement for me because I have always struggled during my writing tests. I am also very happy with my improvements with my reading and maths because I got a 4A in reading, and for maths, I got a 3P, I was hoping for a better score in maths, but I know that next year I can make more improvements. Overall I am very happy with my progress over the past two years, and especially because I achieved my main academic goals, which was to get better grades in my tests.

Another one of my goals was to participate in more school activities such as sports, at the beginning of the year we had athletics day, where the whole day is filled with heaps of different sports, and the school was testing you to see if you could be a good fit for our school’s athletics team. I made it in for the long jump, which was really exciting to watch our school play sport against heaps of other intermediates. I also participated in our WIS netball team, I thought that was a good opportunity for me because it really boosted my confidence with versing other teams. and it’s also something I can contribute in when I get to high school.

Being in Mr. Kauones class really helped me with my learning because at the beginning of last year, I had no confidence in my learning but he taught me to be my number 10!

Mr. Kauone’s expectations of me were to get better marks in my tests and to stay focused /to always be my number 10. This class has also taught me to have a growth mindset, and always put effort into my work.

Over the past two years, we learned a lot about growth mindset! Personally, I think learning about this topic really helped me understand how to be a better person/student. Having a growth mindset changes the way you think and act!

This year we focused a lot on topic inquiry, one of our main focuses was the impact that culture has on the environment. My group and I choose water pollution because we believe this is a big problem that is happening all around The World. First, we researched how you can make a positive change. Our next step was to find waters/lakes in our community and see how many of them had several amounts of plastic inside the water. Our final step was to take action, we still haven’t gotten up to this task but we did start our plan on how to do our part in taking care of our environment 🙂

This year Room 7 created a classroom culture, it’s used to remind our class that we work as a team and we should all respect each other, I think Room 7 done a great job with making our class values, and we also did a great job of following them throughout the year! 🙂 Room 7 also has a class motto which is “work smart play hard love life” this means that in order to play hard, we need to achieve and complete our work first!!

To celebrate such a great two years at WIS, the year 8s have a formal! This is something I have been very excited about for so long! We have recently started formal dancing for PE which I enjoy a lot!. My friends and I have planned a lot for this night and we can’t wait to finally experience it! 🙂

Intermediate has made me a new person! It has changed the way I act towards my learning and it’s definitely changed my attitude and confidence in speaking in front of my class.

I am going to miss WIS and I am very happy with the impact it has had on me!

In conclusion, I had the best two years at WIS and I am so happy to leave knowing that I achieved one of my main goals! I am definitely going to take on more sports at SHC and keep following our key competencies, the ones I need to focus on most are definitely managing self and participating and contributing because I get very distracted in class so I need to focus and manage myself better. I also want to participate in school activities next year at SHC! – Ashlee

End Of 2018

At the start of the year my class Room 7 started learning about Growth Mindset. For Growth Mindset, we learned about Fixed mindset and Growth Mindset. We started doing challenges like word searches (we had to get into buddies and I worked with Maliana). Day 7 –  Gratitude Challenge – I found Growth Mindset quite challenging because when I first heard about it I was like “What is Growth Mindset? I have never heard of Growth Mindset before and why is it called Growth Mindset?” but now I understand Growth Mindset.

I did Ask for help because I always struggle with my work so I would either ask Debbie or Mr. Kauone. I ask questions even though I don’t understand something I would ask so that I understand what something is or what something means. I am happy with my summative test results I know that I will get higher marks next year!

One of my goals and key competencies is to stay focus/managing self. I feel like I haven’t yet achieved this goal because I still get distracted but I can keep following this goal in 2019!

This year in Room 7 we focused a lot on topic inquiry, my favorite was definitely the impact that culture has on the environment. I choose to research about litter, NZ suffers a lot from people littering around our community and country. My plan for solving littering was to go around places in our community with my peers and pick up any rubbish that I see.

So far WIS has been great for me because I am slowly changing my behaviour and attitude, I think I have better behaved this year because I have learned the consequences of getting into drama.

I also feel like being in MR Kauones class has helped me realize that I always need to be my  #10 and not my # 1. Next year when MR Kauone leaves for TKT I am still going to keep our class motto to remind me to “work smart play hard, love life”

As its coming to the end of 2018, it has been an awesome year for me even though I will be a year 8 next year. I am really excited for 2019 because I will be in a different class also Mr. Kauone will be in TKT next year. Some teachers won’t be here next year Mrs. Ta’ala won’t be here next year because she is going to Samoa for a couple of years or so. I am sad because Mrs. Ta’ala is leaving, I love Mrs. Ta’ala I started in Room 4 before I moved into the best class in the school, Room 7. I love Room 7 because Mr. Kauone always tells me straight all the time especially when I am not listening or paying attention to Mr. Kauone then when it is time to do work I won’t know what to do or how to do it. That is why I have set goals for the new year.

To summarise my first year at WIS I am happy with my progress and very excited to see what 2019 brings! This year has been very challenging for me, to stay focused and concentrated but in the end, I did achieve one of my personal goals, which was to manage myself. Overall I’m very excited my second year at WIS! – Leincohne

A New Start

This is my end of year reflection evaluation,  I’m going to cover the things I have done this year in my class.

When I first came into Room 7 I was not used to finishing my work in the time given.  If we did not get our work done in time we would be sent outside the staff room to finish it by Mr. Kauone.  We had Writing and Reading and Math work and it was hard for me with the time I had to have it finished because I’m not used to working that fast. I was doing a rushed job with my work but I worked out how to manage my time better to fit everything in.

Whamaire/Room 7 – classroom culture, values, and motto – work smart, play hard, love life! This is a very good motto because working smart means to take my time do my work. properly, play hard is my class who are very sporty and love life is to appreciate the best in everything. It matches my class.

My goals were; Thinking  Contributing and Participating and this is how I achieved them I. Participated in more sports in school. Also being better organized and ready to learn. Didn’t fidget Stay away from people who will distract me and Listen more carefully. It’s getting to the end so how did I do with my goals? I have listened more to the teacher and so I’ve understood more and do my work better. I did not get into any sports teams, unfortunately. I was more organized and ready to learn. I moved away from people that were annoying me. I did not fidget all the time I did sometimes. I’m happy with what I have achieved this year especially with my spelling and improving key competencies like managing myself better.

Mr. Kauone has taught us, TOPIC & FOCUS, topic is like Reading/Writing and a focus could be Finding Information, and then we have a focus inside that topic so like for me it could be spelling. We do work on that topic like learn how to spell because you can never be to too good with spelling.  And we keep doing that focus and stay at it until we have mastered that our learning intention.

This year has been good, at the start I was in Room 5 but I moved into Room 7 because my friend was in Room 7 and said Mr. Kauone was a great teacher. In Room 7 I have upped my game and I have learned more in this class also the people are nice. The class is organized and I got organized so I got my work done and I am much better with my work. I have gotten better with my thinking and ideas and I’m super proud of myself because I have achieved a lot in less than one year in Room 7. – Lucy

Final Goodbyes 2018

Coming towards the end of my intermediate years I’m going to write about my achievements throughout these past two years. At the start of the year my teacher’s expectations were already pretty high because this is my second year in Mr. Kauone’s Room 7 class, his expectations for me were for me to improve my in my academic, KC and personal goals, also to stay focused and complete all of my work to a high standard. For my Key Competencies, I have been focusing on participating and contributing.

School culture and values I’ve learned while being at WIS, the school values are Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, and Resilience. The values represent our school and our school culture. These four Rs have helped me, my class and my school stay on task throughout these past two years and also improve in all areas like our academics and social skills etc.

Our class motto (Room 7) is, Work Smart, Play Hard, Love life, which means do your work smart and since you’ve done hardcore work you get to play hard. In Room 7 for everyday work such as maths, reading, writing etc we use a Topic, Focus, Learning Intention, and Success Criteria, our topic represents what we are doing and our focus is what we are focusing on for example if we are learning about writing we would have one main focus like punctuation, our learning intention is similar to our focus but in more detail it’s what we’re actually learning to do, and our success criteria are the steps to achieve the learning Intention.

In WIS we have key competencies and this year in Room 7 we have had a few as personal goals and we work on them during the year. For my key competencies I picked, manage self that pretty much explains itself This means being self-motivated, having a can-do attitude and understanding yourself as a learner. Being good at managing self-means you will be more persistent and resilient, and more likely to be a successful learner. You will get better at managing self as you develop a good understanding of how you learn. Another goal for my key competencies is Relating to Others, this means relating well to a diverse range of people. This includes things like being able to listen well, see different points of view, negotiate and sharing ideas. Relating to others involves knowledge as well as skills, for example, you will learn how and why people are all different from each other.

This term was very enjoyable and I am very excited for term 4’s fun activities, and finishing off my last year at W.I.S. Over these past two years I have achieved so much! Academically and socially! This term we had our summative tests and I am very happy with my end results! Especially with my Reading which I got a level 4A! For Maths, I got level 3P and Writing I got a level 3A, I feel like I could have done better in my maths and writing but I know that I’m still achieving because my score is just a snapshot of my learning.

Overall my two years at WIS has been challenging but fun and I’m gonna miss intermediate so much. Throughout my two years at WIS I have faced many different challenges and overcame them, for example, making many different sports teams also getting higher marks in all of my academics. So, in conclusion, WIS has helped me in many different ways and I’m very sad to leave. – Shania

End Of 2018

At the start of the year, Mr. Kauone had high expectations of me. His expectations were of me to be my #10 throughout the whole year. Being my #10 is when I am being the best of my capability and when I go for everything. He expects me to improve my academic, Key Competencies and achieve all my personal goals and my overall confidence and ability.

I also learned the school values which are Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, and Resilience. These values have helped all of my class with their behaviour and learning.

Wharemaire Whitu / Room 7’s motto is to, Work Smart, Play Hard, Love Life. Mr Kauone says if we work smart and play hard then we will love our life. He has a different, but a good way of teaching. He pushes us to be the best of our capability.

In Term 1 Room 7 started learning about Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset is when you believe you will get stronger and never giving up. Every week or so we did 1 growth mindset activity. Our 5-day growth mindset challenge and was made up of 5 activities. Some of the activities that we did were: Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset, Word Search, Fixed or Growth Mindset, The power of YET and My Gratitude list.

At the start of the year, I learned about Key Competencies. The Key Competencies are Thinking, Managing Self, Relating To Others, Participating and Contributing and Using Language, Symbols, and Text. My weakest Key Competency at the start of the year was Managing Self. Right now I know that I have definitely improved in Managing myself and just being organized in general.

At the start of the year, all of Room 7 made their own Learning goals. My academic goals were: Maths: Listen so that I understand the learning experience/strategy/FUA etc, Reading: Learn the structural and language features for different genres, Writing: Brainstorm and plan my ideas for writing before I start my 1st draft. My personal goals at the time were to be more organized for Netball games and training.

Every time Room 7 does Reading, Writing and Math etc we have a Topic and a Focus, Learning Intention and Success Criteria. We have all of these things so we know what the lesson topic is and what we are learning to do and to finish our work successfully.

The Learning Pathway is the way to successfully complete our topic inquiry, the steps they are: developing/clarifying an idea, testing an idea, learning/exploring more, taking action, cheeking/reflecting/evaluation, sharing/presenting.

Overall 2018 has been pretty amazing. At the start of the year, I was really nervous about coming to this school because I only knew 4 of my sisters’ friends from last year. I did get used to people calling me Rinas’ sister but at times it did annoy me but once more people got to know me it stopped. This year has been the BEST. I can’t wait for next year. – Arimawha

So Close

So at the start year, Mr. Kauone spent the first week introducing himself to us. He set me some high expectations because he believed if I worked really hard I could achieve all my goals. One of the expectations was that I needed to talk more because I was really quiet and shy at the start of the year.

So our school value is “Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, and Resilience”. At the start of the year, our class created class culture. We put together words like honest, fair, caring, fun and more because we knew it was the right words to make up our class culture. Our class motto is “ Work Smart, Play Hard, Love Life!”. See to work smart you would also have to play hard and if you do both things nice and balanced you will love your life.

This year, our class did this challenge called the 7-day growth mindset challenge, where we had to complete these activities including a word search, gratitude jar, thank you letter and more. My favorite one was the gratitude jar because it helped me realize all the things, people and places I was grateful for. I enjoyed doing this challenge because it helps me understand more about having a growth mindset and what it means.

This year I made goals, Academic, Key competencies and Personal goals. My personal goals were to learn how to speak either Spanish or an African language. I haven’t quite been working on my personal goal because I was either to busy or I forgot. But I’ve made progress on my Key Competencies. Like I have been participating in more group talks, class talk and even sports and my relating to others are great. My academics goals are going really well. I can describe patterns of reflection, rotation, and translation, Make inferences and my spelling has improved. I’m now age 13 and at the start of the, I was age 11. Also in the test, my score has improved especially my writing. For writing got a 4B for the pretest and the posttest I got a 5B. For the reading pretest I got a 4P and then for the post-test I got a 4A. For my maths pretest I got a 4P then I got a 4A. I’m so proud of my progress I’ve made ever since the start of the year.

Being in Room 7 class, I had to understand how Mr. Kauone’s way works. The way Mr.  Kauone works is that every Writing, Reading and Maths lesson there is always a topic (like shared or guided writing), a Focus ( eg. writing conventions, punctuation), learning intention (what you’re learning) and then success criteria (stuff you need to know to achieve the learning intention because it helps us, students, understand exactly what we are learning and the steps I need to take to achieve.

In Topic inquiry, I know I did a pretty good job. One of the learning steps that I knew I was good at is Exploring/Learning more and in my opinion, I needed to work on Taking Action because on some of our topic inquiry my group would have a plan but not do anything at all also because we didn’t get enough time because Mr. CJ (student teacher) took over and changed our topic focus to Matauranga Maori. and in also need to work on Sharing and Presenting because I would always get only a little bit on achieving in the assessment.

This year has been so fun and I’m so proud of all my achievements in academics and goals. I’m proud that I got a 5B for writing, I’m proud that I’ve achieved one of my old goals to be above or at in all my academics and I’m so proud. I can’t wait for next year with all the new faces and all the new expectations and possibilities. – Maliana

2018 Is Finished

At the start of the year, my teacher Mr. Kauone told us all about himself and also that we had to be our #10 instead of our #1. To be my number 10 meant to do my very best and to stay on task when working on anything so that I achieved work to a high standard for my Reading, Writing and Math etc. Mr. Kauone explained what the KC are and why they are important to us, things like, Managing Self, Thinking Skills, Relating To Others, my KC Goals were; participating and contributing also managing self. I sit by myself but now I am not getting up and going around to talk to people as much now I mostly get up to ask someone for help or something like that not for a chat. Also, I participate and contribute when we have to have group talks in the class

The School Values are Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, and Resilience  Our school culture is built out of a lot of different cultures such as English, Maori, Samoan etc.

Our class motto is work smart, play hard love life, that means that if you work smartly you can play hard and then you will love life witch if it is balanced then you will love life which is a good thing hopefully

Having a growth mindset will help you with becoming your #10 and stop you from being your number #1 and help you stay your number #10 so you are on track at school for high school and maybe even university.

We have something called a learning pathway to help us find which way we are heading in our topic inquiry learning like say we have been doing good and its apart of a good life we would be going the right way for our topic inquiry and all learning so you want to be achieving your goals so you’re going the right way on the learning pathway

Overall 2018 has been great I have been doing a lot better with all my tests I was a 3P for all subjects but now for reading and maths, I am a 4P! Which is 3 sub levels higher. I have participated in sports like the interschool athletics for high jump and long jump which was a lot of fun 2018 has been great. – Jayden

Just A Few More Days

This year Mr. Kauone has believed in me and given me high expectations for my learning, I think some were quite high for me, but I used his feedback and it helped me improve my learning, tasks completion rate and achieve higher work standards. Most of his high expectations were for my academics and Key Competencies. Saying that I should be practicing what I don’t know yet and make it a strong achievement. And also to always be my number 10 meaning that I will be the best I can be and no one can stop me, other than myself.

W.I.S values are: “Respect, responsibility, rigour, and resilience”. Term 1 room 7 created our own class culture. Some words we put together were to be, honest, caring, fair, and plenty more because we students knew they were the keywords to make up our class culture. Room 7’s class motto is “work smart, play hard, love life”. I think that what it’s trying to say is that is you do anything do it smartly and receive the hard work, you would love life.

This year, our class did a growth set 7-day challenge, where we had to accomplish activities including gratitude jar, word search, a thank you letter, and more. I enjoyed doing the gratitude jar because I had realized all of the things I am grateful for, like the people around me, the places, and more.

This year I set goals for myself: Academic, key competencies, and personal goals. My personal goal was to learn a couple of instruments and languages but  I wasn’t really focused on them because I was too busy with my academic goals. My key competencies I know I have made progress with because I have been managing myself more by getting work done on time and focused on my academic goals more. With participating and contributing I have fairly achieved because I have been participating more with the class P.E sports time and been putting more ideas in group conversations. With my academic goals, I have improved with most of them. For mathematics at the start of the year for Algebra/Stats pretest I got a 3P but for the Algebra/Stats posttest I got a level up which was a 3A. With the other math pretest Geo & Meas I got a 3P and with the post-test, I had got the same result 3P. Reading midtest I had got a 4B which I pretty happy about but with the end year reading test I got a 4P! My writing test I did not change I got the same result with mid-year and end year 4P, which I was very happy about but I feel like if I was more focused I could have got a 5B.

Being in room 7 with Mr. Kauone I had learned about his ways around the classroom. The way Mr. Kauone works with academic lessons is that there’s always a topic like shared/guided writing, a Focus like writing conventions and punctuation, learning intention is what your learning about the topic, and the success criteria, helps students understand the steps to achieve the learning intention.

Inquiry Pathway – One of the learning steps that I think I did well on, more than the others were exploring/learning more but the least my group and I didn’t really achieve was the “taking action”, because with some of my groups we didn’t have a plan or didn’t have enough time because of a student teacher came in the class and changed the topic in to “Matauranga Maori”. I also need to work on the “Sharing and Presenting” because when I do the assignment my partner would put down on achieving.

This year, being in room 7 I have made big progress with my academics and I’m really proud of myself. In writing I am working up in a year 8 level, I can’t wait for next year because I really want to be a leader for the year 7’s and the school. – Tameka

Goodbye 2018

So this year is coming to an end and I can’t wait to end the year on a good note.

My teacher Mr. Kauone made some expectations for me, and they were to be my number 10, not number one, and don’t try just do it. There were times this year where I was my number one, and I know that my number one is always going to be with me throughout my life but I just need to accept it, I need to be my number 10 so I can get good test results. What number 1 and 10 mean is when you act like you don’t want do anything and just hang back, but number 10 is where you’re on to it and get your work done.

In term 1 we started to build our class culture and how it makes us superior from all the other classes. We have our own class motto which is Work Smart, Play Hard, Love Life. What this motto means to me is that if you work smart throughout your life and play hard you will love your life.

This year I learned about the key competencies, what they are and how to use them,  these key competencies can be used in everyday life, school work and they can even help you get a job. The key competencies include Thinking, Managing self, Relating to others, Using language symbols and texts and participating and contributing. I’ve set some goals for myself to work on some of these key competencies, the ones I’ve set goals are, Managing self and relating to others, these ones are the ones I need to work on.

For Topic Inquiry I’ve learned about the learning pathway, the learning pathway are steps you take to achieve your goals of taking action. The steps for Inquiry are developing/clarifying an idea, testing an idea, checking, reflecting, evaluating, taking action, exploring/learning more and sharing & presenting.

My academics have improved throughout these 4 terms, learning more problem solving and strategies to solving those problems. But I do tend to get distracted at times and that affects my work for me and for others, but I have worked on it.

My first year here in Wainuiomata  Intermediate School has been astonishing, I’ve met some great people this year and some of them are year 8s so it’s sad that they are not going to be here next year but I hope to see them around. My teacher  Mr. Kauone has been very supportive this year and I am thankful for what he and the year 8s have done for me this year. – Cade

The Next Chapter…

Introduction: I came into Room 7 very skeptical, with only 2 close friends who were in my class, but that obviously changed over time 🙂 Mr. Kauone was very different from any of the other teachers I’ve had he had a completely different mindset towards learning. We have a class motto which is “Work Smart Play Hard Love Life!” that means if you have an equal balance of working smart and playing hard you will love life. As a class, we discussed the expectations of all students in Room 7 to be following throughout the year. We additionally designed a class culture wall with all the keywords with our 4 school values; Respect, Responsibility, Rigour and Resilience which are used to set the foundation for a happy and safe learning environment. These 4 ‘R’s” helped the school and myself stay on track and they are very important for a school to be following.

Goals: I then set some goals which I was wanting to achieve during 2018 based on my previous test results, my own personal sporting goals, and my key competencies to help improve my student agency. The 5 key competencies are Thinking, Managing Self, Relating to others, Participating and Contributing and lastly Using Languages, Symbols and Text. Some of my personal goals were to participate in more school-wide sports and I have definitely accomplished that from participating in Netball, Hockey and surprisingly my favourite Touch! This year has been great, I’ve achieved many of my personal goals such as getting at least one level 6 in my summative testing which I did in my Writing and like I already said partaking in more school-wide sports. I feel like I am still taking the steps in order to improve my Managing self, But that’s okay because there are still 5 more school years left for improvement. Setting goals has affected my mindset towards working to achieve something because a goal without a plan is just a wish.

Summative testing: Over the past year I have been setting goals in order to help advance in all areas of my school life. I set goals for my Maths, Reading, and Writing based on my midterm test results. I was very nervous for all of my testings as this was something I had been working towards throughout the whole year. I am very pleased with how I went improving in all areas of my learning. I got a 5P for Reading and Maths and a 6B for my writing I was very surprised by how I went because I expecting to get a lower score on Writing than I did in my Reading. I focused on how I can improve and fill in the gaps in my learning. I then revised everything I needed to and it certainly paid off well.

Topic Inquiry: For Topic every term we focus on a new view of our society’s issues. In term 1 we looked into personal issues and how we can improve our own personal lives. Term 2 we look into our wider community Wainuiomata finding solutions for local issue, Term 3 we focused on Social injustice events which took place in New Zealand and finally in Term 4 have been working on global issues my group choose to do Water Pollution we created a slide and learned more about how we can stop Water Pollution.

But as 2018 comes to an end there are many activities to look forward to, the one thing I have most been looking forward to in the last few weeks of term 4 is…
Formal! The time has finally come to start finding dresses, shoes, nails etc I have recently just ordered my dress and shoes online which will be here any day now as well as the thrill of getting acrylic and gel nails done with Ashlee and Shania. Although it is pretty pricey and last only a couple weeks it’s all worth it for formal 🙂 Another aspect of formal which I love is formal dancing. This year we are learning or for the year 8’s relearning them from the previous year. Most of our dances are very simple and easy to understand which makes it suitable for all experience levels.

To summarize my 2 very fast years at intermediate has really taught me a lot about being a leader and having responsibilities within our school.  I have had some very memorable moments such as Athletics Days, Being a year 7 waitress at formal, Performing in Kapa Haka as well as with my class in production, and have made some great friends. I can’t wait to continue on to high school and extend my journey through school. – Asharna Owens

I think that what it’s trying to say is that you work smartly and play hard, you will love your life.

This year, being in Room 7, I have made big progress with my academics and I’m really proud of myself. In writing I am working up at year 8 level, I can’t wait for next year because I really want to be a leader for the year 7’s and the school. – Tameka

A Few More Weeks

It’s just a few more weeks until we get a six week holiday at home not going to school playing games hopefully going to another country but first, I have to write my journey through my first year at intermediate.

Mr. Kauone’s expectations for me are high which is fine because for me its just get my work done or get told off. My academics are improving with my Reading, Writing, and Maths in many ways, for example, my test results from my Reading I got 4P on the mid-year test and 4A on the end of year test and my Writing I got 3A on my mid-year test and 4P for the end of year test. I have done well with my goals pretty much achieved them all except for my personal goal. although we took them off of our desks so nobody really remembers them. Key competencies I have done ok managing self I have done really well but participating and contributing I haven’t done that well. It

We started and pretty much-finished classroom culture, we started it with coming up with potential values that would replace the 4 R’s which never happened then we had to get photos that were taken when we were younger and put them up with the values. The motto is work smart, Play hard, love life which means if you work smart in school and play hard in your sport or job you will love life.

We started growth mindset in term two I think it’s basically where if you believe in yourself you will get smarter and your number 1 is your can’t be bothered side and your number 10 is your won’t give up side and effort makes your stronger in a way. I knew most of it already but the number 10 and number one was new to me.

The key competencies are managing self, participating and contributing, relating to others, thinking and using language, using language, texts, and symbols. And the aim of it is for kids to learn new skills and use them in everyday life. I’m good with two of them managing self and thinking, the other ones I didn’t really focus on that much and aren’t good at.

The topic focus learning intention and success criteria I used well although it is designed to help me know what I am learning I didn’t really use or look at them that much even if I did it would only be the title to find what I’m working on I never really looked back at the learning intention or the success criteria I would only write them down. – Cole

Whare maire/Room 7 – Final End of Year Reflection Evaluation – Goodbye 2018, WIS.

Mr. Kauone’s expectations for me were to improve my academics, KCs and personal goals and my overall abilities. Mr.Kauone is a reasonable teacher with a lot of experience plus I trust his expectations of me. They are High and are focused. I agree with his ideas because I need to improve my Key Competencies like Thinking and Managing Self. I achieved my personal goals because I always gain confidence in using my number 10 but Mr.Kauone’s expectations helped me to realize my goals and what I had to do, and I thank him a lot.

School/Class Culture and Values – Respect Responsibility, Rigour and Resilience are the WIS school values. I do my best to achieve them every day, I also focus on our class quote “Work Smart, Play Hard, Love Life!” That’s one of my favourite quotes and I’ll never forget it. We all started talking about different values, and culture, then we decided to create something with all of them. We made a “cultural corner” with photos, values and art were put together to create it.

Academic goals – My Academics at the start of the year was really really bad scoring 3A for all tests. During terms 2 & 3 we set our wrong answers or gaps into goals for the end of year tests and that helped me a lot with the tests. At the end of year tests, which we did a few weeks ago, I thought hard and succeeded 4B in Reading, 4P in Writing and 3A for Maths. The Maths test was just a snapshot, I was in a different mood when I entered the classroom, but I guess I did struggle with it as well.

Personal goals – This year was successful for my academics learning and Key Competencies. My focus was to get over the test level 4 for each test. It wasn’t all achieved but I’m happy with what I’ve got. I aimed to learn with consistency and rigour and it was accomplished. Key Competencies was a struggling habit for me at the start of this year due to my shyness but I’ve improved a lot.

Topic, focus, learning intention, success criteria – Shared/Guided Reading, Writing, and Maths were mostly what we did, we also did Topics like self-cultural identity, local identity, New Zealand historical events and Passion Projects. Success Criteria was the key to achieving the Learning Intention and that’s what I did in all of the Topic and Learning. I love how mister sets up our learning ways.

Next year will be exciting moreover a completely new journey. I’m thankful being in this class and I’ll never forget Mr.Kauone and our class quote “Work Smart, Play Hard Love Life!” I’ll focus on Maths more at High School because I am not an expert at it. This year was quite successful in achieving my academic and KC goals. I’m now more focused on looking after my education first. – Jedidiah

THE END IS NEAR

At the beginning of the year, Mr. Kauone’s expectations of me were very high and he mostly wanted me to stay focused and not just focus on the areas I need improvement on. In academics, I’ve mostly improved my writing which is the area I needed the most improvement on. Also at the start of the year, I was very good at Reading and Maths So he had a high expectation in those subjects too.

We have our school and class values the school values are Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, and Resilience. Our class motto is “Work Smart Play Hard Love Life!” Which in my opinion I think is pretty fair. Our class culture Is to show the class values, some are being patient, happy, helpful, inspire, fair and approachable.

This year I believe I have had a growth mindset while doing my work because I didn’t give up even when I didn’t know how to do it. This year we were taught about growth mindset. A growth mindset is when people enjoy learning and always wanting to learn more or people that don’t give up and keep trying when things are hard. We learned how to have a growth mindset and not a fixed mindset.

For my Key Competencies, I have mostly been focusing on managing myself and time management and this year I have been very good at that. The key competencies are to help give the skills to be able to learn anywhere anytime and to do it even when no one is there to prompt you. You can make your key competencies stronger by using them anywhere like your house or the community.

This year has been a great year for my academics I have done great in Writing and Maths. At the start of the year, we made goals for our academics here’s mine – Read harder Smarter books at home and school, write more interesting sentences and paragraphs, get to level 5 in maths.

At the start of the year, we made personal goals to achieve by the end of the year mine were to be more active in sports and sign up for sports my other one was to help other people when I finished my work.

Throughout the year Mr. Kauone has been writing up our; Topic, Focus, Learning intention and Success criteria in our lesson plans, it is designed to help students understand what they are learning and the steps needed to use to achieve and succeed our learning experiences.

For topic inquiry I have learned about the learning pathway and ways to follow it, the learning pathway are the steps I need to take to achieve my goals. The steps of the learning pathway are Developing/Clarifying an idea, Testing an idea, Taking action, Checking Reflecting Evaluating, Exploring/ Learning more and Sharing and Presenting. The one step that I mostly need to work on is Checking Reflecting and Evaluating. The step that I am the best at is Exploring/Learning more. Overall this year has been great for my academics and everything I needed to work on, such as my key competencies and my learning pathway. – DYLAN

Final Days – Farewell WIS

Teacher Expectations: For me, Mr. Kauone has put high expectation for me and my ability with my academics goals and my social goals. Throughout the year I have been pushed so I can achieve the goals and expectations I needed to gain.

School Culture & Values: Our school values are the 4R’s, (Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, and Resilience). The 4R’s used to actually be only 3R’s. All the student follow these values and all the cultures that are in this school.  Our school culture is also evolved around the school values because when a new culture comes into our school we show Respect, Responsibility, and Rigour.

Waremarie/Room 7 – Classroom Culture: Each classroom has a “Classroom Culture”. Every classroom has one, the classroom culture stands on what the students and the teacher act like with and around each other. Some might have, “Fair, Honest, Inspire, Happy, Patient..” Those types of things that make up the setting for classroom culture.

Growth Mindset: When you believe you can achieve, and if you fail not to give up just to start over again until you get it. If you put in extra time and thinking, that can lead you to get higher achievements in all of the areas in your life. Understanding how to goal set and understand why you set goals in life, goals are something to strive for, put the effort in for, a passion you have.

Key competencies: There are 5 goals in the Key Competencies, they’re Managing Self, Thinking, Relating To Others, Participating & Contributing, Using Language Symbols & Text. They all have an extremely big impact on your social, and academic areas. Managing Self, meaning that you can manage the way you behave moreover someone that couldn’t/can’t. Thinking is self-explanatory, Relating To Other, in the sense that you can relate to people on different levels & different learning.

Academic Goals: The goals you set can be for anything, and you strive to achieve those goals. Academic goals mean that during your learning you set goals for Reading, Writing, & Maths. Reading might be, “Reading fluently”, Writing might be, “Using complex sentences throughout the whole paragraph”, Then maths might be, “Knowing how to pull fractions to a decimal”. Once you achieve these goals another one steps in place and then you strive to achieve that goal because it will connect to the other goal that you had in the past tense.

Personal Goals: Instead of having academic goals, you can also have personal goals. Ones that might involve… Sports, drawing, wood carving. Something you are passionate about other than academics. Unless academics is one of your personal goals, like writing. You might want to become a writer, so that is a personal goal that you strive to achieve. There might be roadblocks on the way, but the thing about roadblocks is you can always find a way around or over them.

Overall: Over the year, it’s been good, I have achieved so many of my goals. I have set other goals for the years coming and I’m confident in most areas for my academics and also with my social ability. Also over the year I have got to know a lot of people and gained many friends. I know that high school is going to challenge me so I’m ready to be pushed. – Ilyse

The End But A New Start

At the start of this year Mr. Kauone spent the first week introducing himself to me, Mr. Kauone set some high expectations for me because he believed that if I work smart, play hard and love life, I will achieve all of my academic, personal and KC goals. One of the expectations Mr. Kauone set for me was I needed to participate more and communicate more because at the start of the year I was very quiet and did not like to join in.

The school values are; respect, responsibility, rigour, and resilience. These school values have helped every class in the school because these school values help manage the school and help the school be a safe and great learning environment. These school values have helped me.

In Room 7 we have a classroom culture, values, and motto. Our motto helps me remember to stay on task, stay positive and be my number #10 being my number 10 means I stay on task and always stay positive and get on with my work. In Room 7 the class motto is work smart, play hard and love life, this motto has helped me because when I am working I can clearly see on the board that we will work smart play hard love life.

Growth mindset this year has helped me think positive and help me know the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset, a fixed mindset means you don’t try and you always give up and a growth mindset means you never give up and you never say I’m not good at this because you will be someday.  I and my class were mainly working on the power of yet the power of yet is you have to believe in yourself and this also means that you will eventually complete your goal or something that you can’t do yet.

My writing goals are Punctuation, Spelling, and Sentences. My math goals were; Order decimals and fraction up to an equivalent of three decimal places, Specify location using bearings or grid references, Find perimeter/area. My reading goals were; Find select & retrieve information, Make and use prior knowledge. Setting these academic goals for me has helped me improve academically. My Key competencies goals were; participating and contributing and managing self these key competencies goals are chosen for me because at the start of the year I was quite and I did not participate and know in term 4 I participate more and can manage myself better.

This year I have set personal goals my personal goals were; participate in more sport and be more confident in sport, I have set these goals because I know that I am not good at sport and I would like to improve on my sport and participate more. These goals have helped me because I now participate in more sport and I believe in myself more

This year in Room 7 we have topic, focus, learning intention and success criteria, these have helped me because when I would like to go back and check my work or reflect I know where to find my work, and this is an easy way for me to find my work because I am a very messy writer.

This year topic inquiry is easier because we have the topic inquiry learning pathway/journey. The learning pathway/journey are,  developing/clarifying an idea, testing an idea, learning/exploring more, taking action, cheeking/reflecting/evaluation, sharing/presenting, these have helped me because now I can look at the learning pathway and know I am more involved and more on task with my topic inquiry.

Overall this year has been great academically and socially, I have made heaps of progress in my work especially my Maths because Mr. Kauone is a very good maths teacher and socially I have made more friends outside and inside of my school. I would like to have a great year next year. – Kayla

Last Week

This year I have seen a great improvement for me in all my academics and in my personal goals. From when I was a Year 6 to making my way to intermediate, I wasn’t the best at being my number 10, but now I feel that I am my number 10 a lot more of the time and that is because my teacher Mr. Kauone pushes me to be my best. For me this year I believe that I have improved a huge amount academically and personally.

School values and School culture to me is very important because it demonstrates how we act and how we behave. To me having these in our school helps keep things balanced and for me, it helps to build a structure how I act and what I do in this school and in my community like how I show Friendship, Encouragement.

At the start of the year, Mr. Kauone and my class Rm 7 created a class culture that is based on what we as a class decided was good for class rules for everyone for example how we act and behave eg: Encouraging, Fun, Patient, Fair, Safe. Mr. Kauone has a class motto which is ‘work smart, play hard, love life’,  and to always be our number 10 to inspire me and others. To be our number 10 is like giving your best effort in everything and always giving things a go even if it isn’t in your comfort zone.

Growth mindset was a 5-day challenge that we did as a class. For a growth mindset, we had to describe what we thought about the topic and why. Some days we would have to do an art piece other days we would have to do a worksheet that had questions we needed to answer. Some of the things we have done in the 5-days was changing my mindset, word search puzzle, fixed or growth mindset, my power of yet, and my gratitude jar.

Throughout this year for my key competencies, I have been focusing on these main topics managing self, participating and contributing. They were my goals. I have made huge progress on all of them. I always manage my time whenever I have worked especially with a time limit and manage myself as well. I have also been participating and contributing into some school sports like Netball and Cross country and I’ve been talking more in class discussions. When I first came into room 7 I wasn’t really the greatest at Key competencies but now I believe that I have stepped up greatly.

For testing this year I have made an improvement in everything particularly in Writing, and Maths. I have always done great in my  Reading but am still striving for improvement. For me, I think that I am working where I should be at for my year level or above. This year I’ve made the most improvement in my academics than what I ever have and I think it is because of my teacher Mr. Kauone and his learning methods.

My personal goals this year have been focused on my academics, key competencies, and sports. I know that I have accomplished what I had set for myself in my academics and key competencies, I am still working on sports but it is something I am going to work on throughout next year but the same goes for my academics and key competencies. I have also been working on becoming a better role model for everyone and myself.

Learning to do my topic inquiry the way Mr. Kauone played it out was a lot different compared to how I had been taught at primary. For me understanding how Mr. Kauone’s ways of teaching is a great difference for me and it has improved my academics and number 10 a lot. In literacy, there is a certain layout that I have been taught throughout this year that has made a dramatic change in my learning and academic scores.

In Topic inquiry, one of the learning steps that I know I am great at Exploring/Learning. In my opinion, I need to work on Taking Action because some of our topic inquiry’s myself and the others in my group would have a good plan and good work but we would always get stuck n this and I personally think it’s because we all, had little knowledge of it. Overall I think that I have done really well with the steps in topic Inquiry and that I have yet more to learn.

Overall this year for me has been great for me in my academics and in my personal goals. To me, this is just the beginning of what I have yet to learn and the improvements I have yet to make. This year has reflected of what I can do and what that does for me which is great compared to any other year. Even though I haven’t been apart of much sports teams I have gone to the meetings to give them a go but I never make the cut so from that I am striving to improve and get better so that I can hopefully get into the sports teams next year and for the end of this year I am going to keep on doing what I’m doing because it has seemed to work out great for me. – April

My teacher expects me to improve my academics and personal goals and confidence and ability too.  Mr. Kauone wants us to be our number 10 and that means doing the best you can on all of our work even if it’s hard doing you don’t stop no matter What don’t stop.

School culture and values rigour, responsibility, respect, and resilience is the school culture and our class coulter is integrity, feeling welcome, being fair, being honest, happy and feeling safe there is more than that but I’m not going to write all of them

Wharemaire/Room 7 – classroom culture, values and motto – work smart, play hard, love life. I think that this saying is good because you don’t like it

Growth Mindset: When you BELIEVE you can get smarter, you understand that EFFORT makes you stronger. THEREFORE you put in extra time and effort, and that leads to HIGHER ACHIEVEMENT in ALL areas of your life. A growth mindset is about not being annoying to everyone and doing what you need no doing a poor job and doing very good and not being the worst

Key competencies are good for young students that don’t listen or be good to the teacher that also can help you with your work and it helped me with my work I can focus hard and work hard

Topic, focus, learning intention, success criteria – This is designed to help students understand exactly what you are learning, and the steps you must complete to achieve and succeed. – Charlie

LAST WEEK AT WIS

At the beginning of the year, Mr. Kauone’s expectations of me were that I was at average and that I should improve in the academic areas I need improvement in, and I think I have shown that I have improved with the areas that I needed help with. Out of all of my academics, I’ve mostly improved with my writing which was the area I needed the most help with.

In my class our motto is to “WORK HARD, PLAY HARD and LOVE LIVE” which means to me if you work hard you will be able to play hard. In my school, our values are Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, Resilience which I think I have tried my best to follow them for the two years that I’ve been here. The classroom values are to respect others, help people that need help and to be patient with other people.

Growth Mindset is the opposite of a Fixed Mindset, it’s when someone enjoys learning more and set goals for themselves to learn more. I think that I’ve had a growth mindset this year because I’ve set myself goals and achieved most of them

The Key Competencies are Managing self, Participating and contributing, Relating to others, Thinking and Using Language, Texts, and Symbols. For my Key Competencies, I have mostly been focusing on Managing Myself and Participating and Contributing, I’ve mostly improved in Participating and Contributing.

In term 2 we started making goals to improve our academics and ourselves and then sticking them to our desks, so for my academic goals I mostly focused on my writing and I actually improved my score by two sub-levels (Sublevels is whereabouts you are on the national standard) which I’m really proud of. And for my personal goal, I wanted to improve on my communication skills because while in class discussions I wouldn’t really share my ideas, so I think that I have improved in Participating and contributing.

The topic and focus are what you are going to learn and what you are going to focus on in that subject, and the learning intention is the steps you will need to succeed in the criteria. This year and last year I found that they were helpful while doing work because it’s easy to follow and it tells you what we are learning and how we can achieve it.

While topic inquiry we use what we call a learning pathway and it was,  seeing whereabouts we are at in our inquiry. The steps of the learning inquiry pathway are; Developing Clarifying an idea, Taking Action, Exploring/Learning more, Testing an idea, sharing and presenting, and Checking/Reflecting/Evaluating. – Devaux

♡Last Term In Room 7 2018♡

This year has brought me many opportunities that I wouldn’t have been brave enough to do last year. I have definitely stepped out of my comfort zone this year. This is my last reflection evaluation for 2018 in Room 7,  Wainuiomata Intermediate.

My teacher Mr. Kauone’s expectations of me are very high. For example, his expectations of me are high because he knows that my number 10 is when I’m personally doing my absolute best, so that will be exactly what he expects from me. For my KC (Key Competencies) I know that I have gotten better in all of my KC. I can confidently Think deeper when I critique what I’m learning or thinking about, Manage myself, Relate to others, Participate and Contribute to different activities and settings, and Use different Languages and text.

At the very start of the year Mr. Kauone and my class discussed over what we wanted to create for our class culture to be. My class brainstormed values we wanted our class environment to be. After we all agreed on our class cultural values, we were assigned a value from our created list to color the word in for display.  Afterward, I and my class hung up the values/words to help remind ourselves of our classes cultural values and learning environment.

In my classroom 7, we have a motto that we go by (work smart, play hard, love life!) my teacher Mr. Kauone has this class motto to inspire myself and the class to always do their best, to be my number 10. The class culture words (that myself and my class had previously made) are always on the back wall to remind us how we should act and feel in the classroom environment. In the school, there are for hole school values that myself and everyone in the school follows, those hole school values are Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, and Resilience.

For growth mindset, myself and my class were manly workings on the power of yet, the power of yet is to believe in yourself, that you will eventually accomplish your goal or something that you can’t do yet. Growth mindset is focused on positive thinking or a positive mindset, the reason that growth mindset is focused on a positive attitude is that its way more effective than having a sad, or mad attitude or mindset. Having a positive mindset will be a way more effective and better for your mental health in the long run.

In my key competencies I know that have definitely improved with all of the skills. The key competencies are Thinking deeper, Manage myself, Relate to others, Participate and Contribute to different activities, and Use different Languages and text. I personally feel that I have most improved on my Thinking Deeper and Critiquing about what I’m learning/thinking about. I have also stepped up with my Participate and Contributing, I think that the main reason that I have improved with my Participate and Contributing, is because of my role as student council.

In my Academics I know that I have made progress, I have definitely made the most progress with Reading, I am very happy with how much I have achieved with Reading this year. For my Writing I am happy with where i’m at, personally I think that I can achieve higher with my writing, but that just means that I already have some goals set for 2019. For my maths I definitely know that I need to practice more often than I currently am practicing now.

One of my biggest personal goals were to join netball, I ended up achieving that goal, I played netball with my team, worked hard, and went to after school practices, and games in the weekend. I am very proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone, and doing something new that I had never done/played before. My second goal that I am most proud of is my confidence, one of my goals were to be more confident and believe in myself. This year I have joined more things then I did last year, I have pushed myself to join more teams/activities. – Jade

Finishing The Year

At the beginning of this year, I was ready to lead our class. I was both excited and nervous to take the role of one of my classes student councilors and I wanted to make sure that I was a great and responsible role model. I have shown all the school values throughout the year, I show Respect, Responsibility, Rigour, and Resilience everywhere on the school grounds.

The academic goals that I wanted to work on were to achieve above Level 4A for each subject, and I have successfully done so. I am really happy with my math scores and my reading scores, but I know that I could have done much better with for my writing. My scores were 5A for my maths, 5P for reading, and 5B for my writing.

My social goal was to succeed in the area of sport. This meant that I wanted to represent W.I.S for inter-school tournaments. I am happy with the number of sports that I was chosen for, these were Athletics, Football, Volleyball, Ki o Rahi and Ignite sports. I really enjoy taking part in these sports and I hope that I can represent the high school as well.

Another thing that we did early in the year was creating our class culture. We all agreed on many different traits that we need to follow to have a safe, trusting and fun classroom. A motto that our class follows is “work smart, play hard, love life” this means that in order to love life, we need to equally work smart and play hard. And something that we all need to do is summon our number 10. This is the best version of ourselves, instead of being my uncaring, selfish number 1.

We worked on our growth mindset in the first half of the year. A growth mindset is being positive, having a good attitude towards most everything, and having an open mindset to be ready to learn more. Something that we learned to do is to add a “yet” to the end of a negative comment, for example, instead of saying “I can’t do this” we can say “I can’t do this… YET!”  The opposite of a growth mindset is a set mindset, this is being certain that you can’t improve, and believing that there is no point even giving things a go.

I believe that my key competencies have improved a lot since the beginning of the year. I have had many opportunities to show my managing self throughout the year by being part of the extension programs, giving me more work to keep up with. I can relate to others because I make sure that I respect them, and I use my thinking every day all day doing work in class, in the school grounds just making general decisions. I participate during class giving answers, joining class conversations and I like to take part in sports activities.

The topic learning pathway is the steps to completing topic inquiry. It consists of developing/clarifying an idea, testing an idea, taking action, exploring/learning more, checking to reflect evaluating, and sharing/presenting. There is no particular order to the pathway and there is not really an end, because we can just keep on learning more.

For my key competencies, I believe that I can do all them well. I participate and contribute all the time during class, I can manage myself, even with extra work, I can relate to others, can think responsibly for myself, and I can use language, symbols, and text.

When writing things out in our books, something that we usually have to do is write out our topic, focus, learning intention and success criteria. Our topic is usually either guided or shared writing, reading, te reo Maori, topic or growth mindset. Guided is when we have workshops and we are run through everything that we have to do, and shared is when we work is small groups or independently at our desks. Our focus is on what it is that we are working on, like for writing we may have an explanation or maybe persuasive, and for maths we might have algebra or geometry. Our learning intention is our main task and our goal to have completed by the end of our lesson. And finally, the success criteria are all the things that I should know or have completed to be successful. – Greg
